October: Unexpected Joy

In her poem “Don’t Hesitate,” Mary Oliver instructs us to grasp hold of unexpected joy (Devotions, page 61; listen here).

If we’re being honest, there’s a lot that does not bring joy right now. But maybe our hearts might feel less heavy for an hour or two if we focus on what does bring joy—fresh, unexpected joy.

Maybe it’s as simple as the cooler weather, PSLs, or pulling a favorite sweater out of the closet. It could be big, like your first grader finally recognizing sight words after weeks of hard work.

I've recently discovered that the NYT mini crossword puzzle is like the highlight of my day... but it takes about 38 seconds. I've always turned down the idea to subscribe for the “big” crossword because it costs money. And then I realized this morning that it's $20 for a year. If I get even one minute a day of joy out of it, it would be at least 365 minutes a year... and that's cheaper per minute than most other things I subscribe to these days.

What’s bringing you unexpected joy? Notice it, write it down, and feast on it—joy is not made to be a crumb, after all.
