Podcast: Finding Your Message with Ashley Abramson
Ashley Abramson is a freelance writer/mom hybrid who writes on mental health and motherhood. She lives in Minneapolis, MN with her husband and two young sons. She’s been published in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Longreads, among others. You can view her writing portfolio here, contact her via her website, or find her on Instagram and Twitter.
Ashley joined us on the Exhale podcast to talk about what it looks like to build your platform without losing your soul -- or your time to write. From our conversation emerged a new way of looking at “platform building”: finding your message and sticking with it. Ashley left us with a prompt at the end to help each listener do just that, too.
Resources we mentioned:
Sonya highly encourages you all to sign up for Ashley’s newsletter, The Angler. She might not send them out all that often, but when she does, they’re golden.
We specifically talked about Ashley’s piece on Longreads from last year about mothering while motherless.
If finding your message is something you’d like a little help with, may we recommend Sonya’s course in the Creative Marketplace called Writing with Purpose? The next class kicks off on April 22nd!
Our prompt for you:
Find your message + core misson as a writer. Craft a mission statement for your writing or creative endeavors, something broad that includes your actual art and the promotion of it. What do you want your work to cultivate, whether it’s a blog post, a magazine article, or an Instagram caption? Establishing a “mission” ahead of time can provide a filter in the future, so you can rest assured knowing that even your “self promotion” will align with your core values.
Our submission idea:
Coffee + Crumbs is closed for submissions until the fall, but Ashley said she’d encourage everyone listening to submit something the next time around. She also reminded us to submit where we like to read: there’s a reason that publication speaks to us.
