Podcast: Encouraging Creativity In Yourself And Your Children

L.L. Barkat is an author, poet, publisher, and mother.  She’s the author of six books for grown-ups, including Rumors of Water: Thoughts on Creativity & Writing and her latest, a fairytale called The Golden Dress. She’s the founder and managing editor of Tweetspeak Poetry and TS Poetry Press which published our very own Callie Feyen’s Teacher Diaries: Romeo & Juliet earlier this year. For a full list of Barkat’s books, visit llbarkat.com.

If you’re not sure where to start in nurturing your own creativity, Laura’s prompt for us all was to take 15 minutes today, everyday for a week, or even for a year and go sit outside. Allow other people to step in and step up to create a little space for you to care for yourself. And if you’re already great at making space but feel a little stuck in your creativity, grab a kid’s book or book of poetry in another language and see if flipping through it doesn’t inspire something in you.

Don’t forget to try a freewrite on Instagram this summer! Follow C+C on Instagram for the latest prompt. Tag your micro-essays with #writeasummerstory in the months of June and July for a chance to have your work featured in the C+C feed.
