Podcast: Creativity & Resting Seasons

“The decision not to rest can be based in fear.” - Katie Blackburn

The Coffee + Crumbs team took their first ever official sabbatical in August, and we thought it would be the perfect time to chat with Katie Blackburn about how rest impacts our creativity, how seasons of rest are necessary, and how to ease back in after you’ve been resting a while.

You can find Katie on her blog or Instagram, when she’s not resting, that is.

Here’s a few things we talked about:

From The Sacred Enneagram by Chris Heuertz:

  • Sabbaths are for Rest

  • Retreats are for Reflection

  • Vacations are for Recreation

  • Sabbaticals are for Renewal

Sonya shared a verse for resting seasons: Isaiah 30:15 (AMP) - “In returning to Me and resting in me you shall be saved; in quietness and trust shall be your strength.”

Sonya also quotes Women of the Word by Jen Wilkin in the episode.

Direct quote from book, Ch.5, pg 78 — “What we sometimes overlook about 'aha moments' is that they occur after a significant period of feeling lost. Could it be that those period of feeling lost were actually preparing us for the understanding that was eventually going to come?”

We’ll paraphrase Jen’s words here: “Trust that you might have to take a step back. Times of resting or waiting often bring the big ‘aha!’ moments that we need after a season where we feel lost.”

Katie’s prompt for you: Find something to ground a season of rest for yourself, something you do that keeps you centered.
