May: Silhouette

It was one of those terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad mom days. I forgot the goggles for the pool, and the whites of my daughter’s eyes were already turning a dark shade of pink. According to my youngest, I didn’t pack nearly enough snacks and grabbed the wrong pool bag (the one missing all the diving coins), much to my seven-year-old’s dismay. To top it off, we were fresh out of water after only an hour of swimming. #winning

I am deeply aware that I am not a perfect parent, but there are some days when I seriously question whether I’m even a decent one. I was feeling all sorts of defeated when my son scampered over to me and slipped his pruny wet hand into mine.

“Dank you for taking us to the poowl, mama,” he said, smiling at me.

As I looked down at him, I noticed our two shadows side by side on the pavement and snapped a quick photo. What you can’t see is the exhaustion on my face, the wrong pool bag on my shoulder, or the empty cooler by my feet. You can’t see the list of things that went wrong or the difficulty the kids had in navigating their disappointment. What you can see is that he wants to hold my hand even still. That is something I don’t ever want to forget.

“The silhouette says a lot with very little information.” - Kara Walker (American painter)

This month, grab your camera, snap a silhouette picture, and write about it. What can’t you see? What story is being told more powerfully by eliminating the details? What are you hoping will be remembered?
