Growing Flowers, Nurturing Dreams
Today’s conversation is centered around all things flowers. We are chatting with Laura Deck, the owner of The Seedlings Flower Farm and Truck in Bloomington, Indiana. Naturally, we have a lot of questions we want to ask Laura about flowers and garden projects but we also want to talk to her about dreams because she was able to turn a tiny seed of a dream into an actual farm full of flowers.
Bio: Laura Deck is the owner of The Seedlings Flower Farm and Truck, which serves southern Indiana with pop-up flower stands, fresh flower subscriptions, wedding and event services, and community and corporate events at their flower farm in Bloomington. She is a Jesus-praising, flower- growing, sheep-loving mama of three. Laura and her right hand man and love of her life, Logan both grew up farming and wanted that same lifestyle for their children. Now, as a family of five, the Decks work together to plant, harvest, and arrange all summer long.

Laura’s tips for fail-proof flowers from seed:
Plant Zinnias, cosmos, marigolds, and sunflowers directly into the ground after Mother’s Day. The first three are cut-and-come-again, which means you can cut stems from the plant and they’ll continue to bloom. You’ll need to use succession planting for the sunflowers. (Plant about 10 new seeds a week through the 4th of July.) These will work in containers, too! “Pro-cut orange sunflowers” are the best sunflower variety for cut-flower arrangements.
Laura recommends buying seeds from your local farm store, or https://www.johnnyseeds.com/
Laura’s tips for DIY bouquets from grocery store flowers:
Get a mixed bouquet.
Focal flowers: sunflowers, roses,
Filler: airy elements like baby’s breath
Line flowers: have multiple clusters of blooms on one stem
Take it home and open the mixed bouquet, begin with your green stems, then the fillers. Put the stem in at an angle so it crosses the stem before. The last flowers to go in will be the focal flowers. Follow this pattern so that the focal flowers have a sturdy base to stand up in! Side to side, front to back, center.
